With this tomato growing guide you will learn all you need to know about water, mulch and cages so that you will always be able to enjoy a bumper crop of delicious juicy tomatoes each and every time.

Tomato Plant Growing Tips

If it’s that time of year when you are about to start thinking about planting your tomatoes then if you’ve reached this web site there is a good chance that the memories of last years yellow leaves will still be haunting you!

Or maybe you’ve heard horror stories of your friends crops which were wiped out entirely from some mystery reason… Well, maybe it’s not that dramatic but in any case we thought it would be nice to just point to a few basic tips for growing your tomato plants in a way that will give them the best chance at success.

  1. If you are starting your plants off from seeds, you should make sure you plant them with adequate space to spread out. For the best results, give them around four inches of root space and plant them at least six inches apart from each other.
  2. When you transfer your plants outside, make sure you give them as much direct sunlight as possible. Keep them away from shaded areas so that they remain warm and receive all the light they need. If you are using lamps, then give them up to 18 hours per day.
  3. Tomato plants can find their way up to the sun if you let them, meaning you can even bury your transplants deep so that only the top leaves are showing. They can develop roots all the way along the stem so by placing them deep you are giving them more of a chance to develop strong roots.
  4. Before you actually decide to transplant your plants to the ground, try covering the area with a tarp so that it builds up a little bit of residual heat. This will reduce the shock your transplants will feel when going to ground from their nice warm cosy pots.
  5. Try to find a mulch that is good at conducting heat and wait until the soil has had a chance to heat up under the warmth of the sun before using it.
  6. Generally it is a good idea to water your plants once per week in their early stages and decrease that to once per two weeks when they are fully grown and beginning to fruit. Reducing the watering at this stage will make sure that the plants can concentrate their sugars into the tomatoes, producing gorgeous, juicy and deliciously decadent orbs of tomatoey goodness. Also, by watering too often you can cause rot and yellow leaves.

This is a list of just a few of the tips that exist for helping you get your tomato plants off to a great start, but of course it is not as simple as just these short ideas. There is much more that goes into making sure your tomato plants are successful and grow without them going bad so we recommend that you get some top quality advice, help and instructions on every step of your tomato growing process by clicking here.
